BWIA v Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Bertie Joel Cup on Sun 10 Jul 2005 at
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Lost 6 wkts
Match report
GP&R, missing a number of first team regulars, put in a good performance in this second round match but ultimately BWIA proved too strong on the day. Electing to bat first, Park soon lost Andy D'cruz and with BWIA's opening attack bowling with a mixture of pace and movement, it looked to be a tough afternoon. Greg and Andy Churchill batted with a great deal of determination to see off the opening attack but the change bowlers, both off-spinners, bowled very tightly giving little for the batsmen to get after. With drinks taken at 23 overs on a very hot day, the score stood at about 75-1. A run out soon after accounted for Greg for 27 but Andy battled on, gradually looking to dominate the bowling in a stand with Chris Swainland, who had arrived after the start having rushed from twelth man duties with Essex at the County Ground. The opening bowler was brought back on and his extra pace managed to get get through Andy's defences as he was bowled off his pads for a well made 55. Chris, looking to attack from the start, had scored a quick 33, including a huge six, before he was adjudged caught behind attempting a reverse sweep. Good contributions and positive running from Alan Croft and James Patient took Park's score towards what looked like a possible 200 but a couple of late wickets pegged the score back. Lee Carter strode to the wicket for the last ball of the innings against the opening quickie and his lack of a helmet brought some friendly comments from the fielders! That ball safely negotiated, the innings closed at 189-6, a reasonable total on not an easy wicket against some good bowling.
Despite only being able to call on one seamer, along with four slow bowlers, Park sensed some early pressure and wickets might be able to turn the game in their favour. After a couple of impressive shots early on, one of the openers was trapped in front going for another big shot against Waheed and his opening partner soon followed. However, BWIA appeared to have strength in depth and their next batsmen continued to score at a quick rate despite a good effort by everyone in the field, one or two loose balls in most overs being punished by two good batsmen. Park managed to get a couple more wickets and gave maximum effort until the end but BWIA were scoring at a run a ball and brought up the win just after the thirtieth over. However, a mostly young and inexperienced GP&R side could not be faulted for their effort throughout the game but were beaten by a stronger side on the day.
