BEXLEY v Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club National Cup 1st XI on Sun 16 May 2010 at 1PM
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Lost on run rate
Match report
Park travelled to Kent Premier Division side Bexley for this National Cup 1st round game expecting a tough tie and so it proved as a mixed GP&R side found themselves facing a full strength opposition coming off the back of a win against current Kent champions Bromley the previous day.
Bexley won the toss and chose to bat on a good looking wicket with a fast outfield and short boundary on one side. Opening bowlers Khan and Miller started well, Khan finding his line and length immediately while the occasional loose delivery from Miller was punished to the short boundary. However, in the fifth over Khan made the breakthrough trapping Bell in front LBW and shortly after Miller had Ball well caught by Naipaul at point. The wicket gave Miller renewed confidence and he immediately settled into the perfect line and length conceding only 11 runs from his next 6 overs and in the fourteenth over he struck twice, first having Richards caught behind by Webber diving forward and three balls later trapping Pinnock LBW for a duck. At 63-4 Park could be pleased with their start but Wells was starting to look settled and as Naipaul replaced Khan he punished anything short or off line. With Miller bowled out, Abeysinghege replaced him and after a couple of legside wides, he found the mark with his left arm inswing and had Sheddon LBW to leave Bexley 90-5 after 20 overs. Not long after came a crucial moment as Wells flicked Abeysinghege down the legside but despite a good effort from Webber the chance didn't stick. Wells and Pointer then took the game away from Park, running well and batting positively. In the next 18 overs they scored 145 runs without giving a chance as all the bowlers came in for punishment. Finally in the 39th over Ali made the breakthrough by bowling Wells after he had passed his century and he then repeated the feat with Riley two balls later. Khan's return to the attack to finish his overs saw him finally dismiss Pointer for 69 and although home skipper Silver continued the blitz by scoring 23 from 12 deliveries, Abeysinghege's re-introduction saw him clean bowl Bexley's 10 and 11 to leave them all out for 287 in the 44th over.
Despite the size of the target, Park knew if one or two of their batsmen got in the chase was still possible but they got the worst possible start as Levy was bowled by Ball in the fourth over. Walker and Abeysinghege then took the score onto 32 when Walker looked to hit Silver back straight and was bowled as well. Ali joined Abeysinghege and they watchfully looked at rebuilding the innings but the rate was well behind the 6.3 required with rain looming. The game was duly interrupted after 14 overs with 20 overs required to constitute a game. However, despite the leaden skies the break was shorter than expected and Park resumed without losing any overs, only for Ali to edge Thorburn behind almost immediately. Abeysinghege followed soon after, looking to take on the offspin of Riley, and any slim hope of making a game of it disappeared. Woollard was adjudged LBW with only a single added to the total. In the growing gloom, Khan hit a couple of nice boundaries over the top but then miscued to be caught while Naipaul was then unlucky to be run out backing up as the bowler flicked Churchill's straight drive onto the stumps. After 27 overs another heavy downfall forced the players off once again and with little chance of play resuming and given the state of the game it was agreed to finish the game with Bexley winning on a far superior run rate. Good luck to Bexley in the next round.
