Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 5th XI v WICKFORD 4TH on Sat 31 Jul 2010 at 1PM
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Won 5 runs
Match report
This was an excellent and hard fought match played in the right spirit on a pitch which gave all the bowlers some unpredictable assistance but a fast outfield that gave full weight for the shot. Park lost the toss and were asked to bat first and the Wickford opening bowlers were quickly into good line and length. Debutant Sampath Gamvasam played one nice shot for four and then was LBW to an unplayable delivery that shot straight along the ground. Ian Greenwood received a ball that lifted from a length and Nelson Lopes immediately succumbed to a fine catch in the gully off the middle of the bat, making it 42 for 3. Michael Clifford kept calm and with Rajesh Kanojia took the score to 94 with some sensible batting before Raj was well held for a caught and bowled and Michael then succumbed the same way just having completed a good 50 (seven 4s), soon followed by Danny long, 110 for 6. Salim Patel hit four 4s and then was caught off one that stopped but 12 year old Josh Turner and veteran skipper Andy Jenner took the sting out of the situation and added 40 before Josh was out for 19 made with great composure on a difficult surface. Michael Ryder had time to hit two boundaries before the declaration with Jenner on 18 not out. The Wickford attack performed well with the young seamers impressing, Tom Morris finishing with 3 for 33 off 9 overs, and a brace for the two Greens, Steven and Michael. Alan Moss led the reply by attacking the bowling with good help from Michael Green at the other end and the score raced along before he missed a full toss and was LBW for 19, 35 for 1. The introduction of the slower bowlers posed more problems however and Green went for 27 off Ian Greenwood and Leaver fell LBW to Lopes for 18. The batting continued in aggressive vein as Park kept the field in and attacked themselves, and the game flowed with 94 needed off the last 20 overs and Wickford with 6 wickets in hand. Wickets fell at regular intervals to Greenwood and Lopes, and when a stand needed breaking Michael Ryder nipped in with a vital wicket, but the young middle order played well with Josh Parry playing sensibly although in the latter part of his inninmgs he needed a runner. 19 were needed when the last pair came together and Tom morris hit three fours to bring the sides very close but Lopes produced the last wicket to get Parry to a good diving Danny Long catch and the match was over, Park winners of a thriller by five runs. Greenwood finished with 16o 4m 39r 4w and Lopes 14o 1m 64r 4w, and there were two catches each for Long, Kanojia and Clifford behind the stumps. Terrific match and full credit to both teams. Next week we play Horndon on the Hill 4ths away.
