LEIGH ON SEA 4TH v Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 5th XI on Sat 19 Jun 2010 at 1PM
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Won 6 wickets
Match report
It was a cool and blustery day to visit Belfairs Park, but the match turned out to be close and hard fought, credit to both teams for the manner in which it was played. Leigh won the toss and decided to bat, and with a strong wind blowing down the pitch the bowlers initially found it difficult to control the ball. The openers proceeded to 35 before the introduction of debutant Aidan McDonald saw Peter Luker very well caught diving forward at square leg by debutant colt Mueez Quereshi, and three balls later the number three was yorked. Another good catch at midwicket by Mughir Qureshi accounted for the number 4 but this brought Neil Attwood to the crease and he played a well controlled innings of 50 with some nice cover driving and back foot forces initially in the company of opener Brady (31) and then the middle order. However by this time Nelson Lopes had begun an impressive spell with the ball to keep things in check and the other bowlers (including another promising spell from Michael Ryder) supported him well at the other end as the innings faltered. Eventually after a short rain break the home side declared at a competitive (for the conditions) 150 for 8. Nelson finished with 15o 5m 2w for 26r, Rajesh Kanojia took 2 for 41 and Ian Greenwood chipped in at the end with 2 for 8.
Leigh bowled well at the start of the reply and after 33 had been added Ian Greenwood miscued to square leg. the left arm seam of Neil Attwood (Leigh's man of the match ) removed the in-form Ammar Zahid yorked and Rajesh Kanoji bolwed by a peach of a ball in the same over; 50 for 3, which became 73 for 4 when chris Lamb was out to that man Attwood. All the time however Craig Bray had been playing a very composed innings, his first for over a year, and with sure play in support from Nelson Lopes he guided the innings forward, being severe on the bad ball especially with some cracking cover drives as the innings accelerated. The pair added an unbroken 81 for the 5th wicket to take Park to the win with 13 overs left, Craig finishing on 80 not out (9 fours) and Nelson 29 not out. For Leigh Attwood finshed with 3 for 29 off 8 overs. A terrific match!
