Match report This local Derby match was played on a generally low and slow pitch, and it turned out to be a gripping encounter with Park retrieving the situation through a strong team performance to win by 38 runs with 10 balls remaining. Having lost the toss Park found themselves batting first and were a wicket down in the first over (and this after the visitors had withdrawn an appeal for LBW - which had been given by their umpire - two balls earlier). Only in the 5th team? However in the face of steady bowling from a generally youthful attack Ian Greenwood (32) and Ammar Zahid (an assured 50 with 8 fours and a 6) made satisfactory progress and reached the half way stage at 88 for 3. In the next over veteran slow bowler Frank Grann held a truly remarkable return catch to dismiss Zahid off a fierce drive, but badly split the webbing of his bowling hand and took no further part in the match, having six stitches inserted instead. At this point the Park innings succumbed to some medium pace from Kieron Scardioli (4 for 39)and a shooter which trapped Rajesh Kanojia leg before. So 88 for 3 became 120 for 8, a big turn round. Skipper Andy Jenner (20)and number 9 Salim Patel (18 not out) then batted sensibly through the remaining 15 overs and added 45 before the former was out to another shooter, but a final score of 171 for 9 was a good achievement in the circumstances.
Hornchurch were left a maximum of 48 overs but also lost an early wicket to some hostile bowling from Jon Roberts. Les Gilbert and Mat Clifford played well however and despite the bowling changes proceeded to 96 for 1 with 5 minutes and 20 overs remaining. At this point a change of ends for Ian Greenwood's off spin produced the trick as Gilbert was bowled for an excellent 44 (6 fours) and the next ball produced a stumping. 75 required off 20 overs with five wickets left but Frank Grann unable to bat. Despite the best efforts of the youthful Hornchurch middle order Park made regular inroads thanks to wickets for Nelson Lopes, a run out after excellent work by Michael Ryder and Danny Long, and Greenwood again, leaving 11 overs available at the last pair. They played well, but Nelson sealed the win with a great delivery as time was running out, Ian taking 5 for 33 off 15 overs and Nelson 2 for 10 off 9 overs. Once again the match was played in great spirit on an at times awkward pitch and credit to both teams for a great game to play in!
