Match report With poor weather all around at Wickford the match managed to start on time in dry conditions and despite two rain breaks taking 50 minutes out of the match remarkably the game proceeded to a finish as the pitch and conditions held up. Park lost the toss and were asked to bat first on a pitch that played awkwardly low and with a very slow outfield. Ian Greenwood was out in the first over to one which kept low and likewise Ammar Zahjid and Ahmad Butt, to make it 22 for 3. With Chris Lamb getting a good one this became 32 for 4 and the young Wickford bowlers led by a fine spell from Dave Harrison (who finished with 3 for 29 off 13 overs) were well on top. Nelson Lopes and Rajesh Kanojia grafted to add 34 before and after the breaks for rain, but two more wickets fell to make it 76 for 6 and no-one clear what a good score might be in the conditions. Anil Patel kept one end steady however whilst Rajesh hit anything loose for four and together they added 75 unbroken as the change bowlers failed to have the same impact as the early attack. Rajesh finished with a splendid 77 not out (15 fours)as Park declared after 40 overs, giving themselves a maximum of 42 overs to bowl back. As a side note, Wickford's young side fielded very well.
With the pitch playing easier Park made an early breakthrough but Alan Moss used his experience in a second wicket stand of 45 with Leaver which was ended by a great catch diving by Danny Long at cover. A further 35 were added with Roche for the third wicket to set up the prospect of a close finish as Park's bowlers struggled for consistency. Ahmad Butt returned for a second spell and chaged the innings as he took a sharp catch off his own bowling and followed up with two more wickets to make it 104 for 5 with 14 overs left and when Moss was out for an excellent 55 and at 112 for 6 the home team settled for a draw. However, a shell like throw from the deep by John Roberts produced a run out and with time ticking away and into the last five overs 15 year old Michael Ryder came on and took two wickets in his first and only over (one caught at slip, one bowled) and with the last man absent (having left) the game was over, Park had won with two overs to spare. Ahmad Butt finished with 4 for 28 off 9 overs, and Michael Ryder 2 for 5. Phew! Credit to both sides for a well contested match played in great spirit.
