SOUTHEND ON SEA & EMT 4TH v Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 5th XI on Sat 22 May 2010 at 1PM
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Won 6 wickets
Match report
On a blameless sunny day Park found themselves with 9 men to visit Southend on Sea and EMT 4ths thanks to an injury and a no-show at the meet. Come on the 9 men! as they won convincingly thanks to 6 wickets from Ian Greenwood and some consistent batting. Southend won the toss and batted first on a slow but true pitch and had 23 on the board before losing their first wicket. The second wicket pair of Singh and Jeffries were increasingly assured however and started to accelerate, despite sterling work by Kanojia and Lopes to keep things in check, taking the score to 98 when a misjudgement led to Singh run out for 29. Jeffries followed next over, LBW to Ian Greenwood for 43 trying an ambitious pull, but the total moved to 125 when there was an incredible collapse as Greenwood took 3 wickets in one over with his off spin, Nelson Lopes chipped in and Greenwood then took two more, Lopes one and the innings was over in a flash, 132 all out off 39.2 overs. Ian had the remarkable figures of 7.2 overs six for 32, Nelson finished with 2 for 36 off 13 and Rajesh Kanojia 1 for 35 off 13.
Left with three hours batting and a pitch by now playing low, Ian Greenwood and Ammar Zahid proceeded sensibly, hitting the bad ball and playing the good ones, and they added 67 for the first wicket before Ammar was well held at long on off the persevering Southend skipper Simon Wray for 24. Greenwood immediately cut to slip (24) but Ahmad Buttt and Chris Lamb ran well and hit some good shots before both perished going for big hits when well set - 116 for 4, a slight wobble, but a huge 6 by Raj Kanojai and some cultured drives by Nelson Lopes made the win certain for Park off 29.3 overs.
A nice side point on the game was to meet former Romford CC stalwart David Stranks (now 70) umpiring for Southend.
