Havering-Atte-Bower v Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Under 15's on Sun 03 Jul 2005 at 9.30am
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Won 12 runs
Match report
After a disappointing performance last week against Hornchurch Athletic it was important GPRCC U15’s bounced back this week against Havering-Atte-Bower.
Park won the toss and elected to bat first, on a very dry wicket, where the ball came on slowly and made it difficult to time shots.
Matt Peacock was the first victim striking a ball on middle stump out of the middle of the bat, very firmly to mid wicket in the 4th over when Park were on 15. Waleed Wain entered the fray in his customary No3 spot and together with the reliable Eddie Gavigan put on 26 runs for the second wicket, when Eddie hit a powerful shot to extra cover, but failed to keep the ball down, picking out the fielder Hurley who took a good low catch. Vijay Vyas came to the wicket and in company with Waleed (disregarding the sometime comical collisions when running between the wicket and failure to call properly GO ofen being mistaken for NO) put together Parks best stand of the season; 44 runs in 9 overs when Waleed was out for 24 in the 16th over. Park were now 85 for 2, they then suffered a mini collapse, and soon found themselves 94 for 5 by the 18th over. Hamir Gadhvi and Danny Feasey rallied well at the end of the innings and put on 11 with some scampering and much required urgency between the wickets (not without some amusing moments) leaving Park with a reasonable total of 105 for 6.
Park then played to their strength, their bowling; good tight opening spells from Eddie Gavigan 3-0-10-0 and Steven Gallagher 3-1-7-0 put Havering on the back foot restricting them to 21 for 1, Peat for Havering having suffered an unfortunate run out. Alex Alexandru playing in his last game of the season (owing to unforeseen family commitments – THANK YOU ALEX FOR YOUR EFFORTS – YOU WILL BE SORELY MISSED!!! I’m sure I speak on behalf of all the lads when I say GOOD LUCK) came on first change and started off somewhat erratically, but to his credit he got it back and ended a 4 over spell with creditable figures of 4-0-23-2. Captain, Waleed Wain wisely bought himself on 3rd change and found himself on a hatrick in his first over, he was unlucky not to get it when the batsmen inside edged the ball for 1 run, he bowled an excellent spell 4-0-10-2 (the only bowler not to bowl a wide – well done Waleed). Some excellent catches and adequate fielding from Park kept Havering in check, in particular Matt Peacock when fielding at fairly short backward square leg, Umer Sharif bowled a short ball in the 17th over, that was pulled and middled by the batsman, Matt stood his ground and took the catch with the reverse hands technique just in front of his forehead. Preventing likely decapitation and what may have been a horizontal six with the short boundaries at the Havering ground. Havering required 23 to win from the last 2 overs, when Steven Gallagher returned to bowl his last over which he did conceding 4 runs, bowling the Havering top scorer; D Beechey for 18, this left Eddie Gavigan to return and bowl the last over with Havering needing 18 runs to win, they were only able to achieve 6, Park eventually winning by 12 runs.
Closer than it should have been.
I think the boys would agree we lost our way a little in our innings, we probably should have scored 120 plus.
A little credit where its due though, a spirited effort in the field by everybody saw us through.
WELL DONE LADS.
