FIVES & HERONIANS v Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 3rd XI on Sat 03 Sep 2005 at 1pm
Match was Drawn
Match report
Fives switched this match from Old Chigwellians to Peter May Cricket Centre and the teams turned up to find themselves on a back pitch with two soccer pitches either side, fully marked out, and goal posts in the outfield. A somewhat surreal surrounding for a league match! Fives only produced a clock - no boundary markers and not even a scoreboard, and after the home side won the toss and asked Park to bat, the Park players hunted round to find a scoreboard, spare balls in case any were lost (these were needed) and also a source of drinks for the players on what was a hot afternoon. Again somewhat surreal that the away side in effect had to act as the home side because of the shortcomings of the home sides' arrangements on the day!! Ater the loss of an early wicket Matt Burch and Andrtew D'Cruz put on 106. It was hard work on a turgid, slow pitch and slow outfield, but they made good progress against an ordinary attack. Andrew made a good 39 and Matt hit some great boundaries in his 61. Thereafter the run scoring kept on the move through the younger players and there was a fine stand between two of the younger players, Adam Locke and Waleed Wain, who added 82, Adam hitting 37 and Waleed a great 52 not out. The declaration came after 50 overs on 237 for 5 wih extra time likely to be required if a win was to be gained because of the verly slow pitch.
Fives approach was kept in check by opening seamers Winmill and Jenner with a lot of pad play but no joy for LBW appeals - one of those no decision days probably. Only the advent of some big hitting by number four Dhayaa with seven fours and a six in a rapid 54 put Fives in the game. Park plugged away with an attacking field and no help from the pitch as edges and big hits combined to keep the score moving so that 105 was needed in the last 20 overs with seven wickets in hand. Waleed Wain produced a good spell of seam bowling to nab two wickets and Paul Winmill, who bowled very well in two spells in the match picked up wickets as the fives batsmen struggled to accelerate. 27 were neede off three overs but the match ended in a draw with Park having bowled 57 overs! winmill ended with the impressive figures of 4 for 50 off 22 overs. The result keeps Park in second place with one match to play.
A final note on a strange day - league rules (in place for many years) only allow drinks to be taken in the second innings immediately prior to the last 20 overs, but they were offered to the Park fielders after two of the last 20 had been bowled and therefore could not be taken. Interesting day all round really!!
