SOUTH WOODFORD v Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 3rd XI on Sat 27 Aug 2005 at 1pm
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Won 8 wickets
Match report
Skipper Matt Burch won the toss at South Woodford and asked the table topping hosts to bat first on a green tinged pitch. Veteran seam bowlers Paul Winmill and Andy Jenner obtained a little seam movement and swing, bowling good line and length, and immediately applied pressure with the first seven overs all being maidens and yielding only three byes. The first wicket fell after an hour with Winmill clean bowling the dangerous Craddock who was frustrated in his attempts to take away the bowlers' initiative, and two more wickets fell to Winmill and Jenner with the score reaching 82 after 34 overs. Dave Cobill nipped in with one victim well held by Winmill at slip, Tom Kershaw and Peter Thain took well judged catches and Park's young team fielded really well in support of the bowlers as Jenner took four wickets in a row. Brief resistance came from number 9 Javed with 27, ended by a smart run out, but a final score of 160 after 52 overs was well below par for the conditions. Winmill had excellent figures of two for 55 off 22 overs, and Jenner five for 86 off 26 overs, Cobblers returning one for 12.
Openers the in-form Ron Montgomery and colt Sam Bragg (just back from three weeks holiday) were in no mood to let the initiative slip and had 30 on the board inside six overs, and 85 on the board off 15 overs. South Woodford tried seven bowlers in all but none could find a way through until Bragg was caught with the score on 133. His 64 included eight fours and two sixes. As so often happens a second wicket fell straight away, but Montgomery continued to put away the bad ball and Tom Kershaw hit three boundaries as Park won in style before the last hour was called. Monty hit 11 fours in his 81 not out out and all in all this was a was a very good display all round from a young side, especially as the host club are runaway leaders of the division.
The result takes Park into second place but still 29 points behind the leaders with two matches to go and all to play for.
