Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 3rd XI v WALTHAMSTOW on Sat 20 Aug 2005 at 1.30pm
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Won 7 wickets
Match report
After two poor results and with better availability Park got back to winning ways against a below strength Walthamstow side in a comprehensive 7 wicket win at Gallows Corner. The visitors won the toss and batted but soon lost their first wicket to a diving Ron Montgomery catch at slip off Andy Jenner. The second wicket pair put on 30 but Paul Winmilll struck three times in quick succession, all clean bowled, to go past 50 league wickets for the season and the writing was on the wall. Despite brief resistance the visitors always found scoring difficult and the only batting success was Sheikh at number 7 who scored 21 not out. Two wickets in an over for Andy Jenner, a run out and a further wicket apiece for the two bowlers (including a great slip catch from Billy Payne off Wanger) and the innings closed on 89. Winmill took an excellent 5 for 47 and Jenner an equally good 4 for 35 as they bowled unchanged.
Ron Montgomery and Tom Kershaw made sure that the Park reply got off off on the right footing against the expereinced left arm seamers of Sheikh, and against two young seam bowlers, adding 30 before the latter departed to a fine catch at mid off. Thereafter Monty produced some very good form with a succession of boundaries, and despit the loss of Billy Payne to a run out Ron made sure of victory with 22 off an over (losing the ball in the process!) and finishing on 66 not out. Waled Wain was lbw with two needed, but this was a good morale boosting win to keep Park in the top four with three matches to go (one against current leaders South Woodford next week, one against bottom dogs Fives & Heronians , and the final match against local rivals, and currently second placed, Hornchurch ). With the league still very open there is a lot to play for!
