Match report
As last week, Dave can go on!
The Oxford English dictionary, that I own, says that 'health' is a "state of physical well being" and that 'mental' applies to "the processes of the brain". Mental health questions should be raised about those in Gidea Park and Romford 5ths and Wanstead 6ths. Playing in torrents of rain is not fun, neither is umpiring in it, or indeed spectating in it! But we went on through spitting and floods of a biblical proportion. On what looked a flat pitch Park's returning Skipper put Wanstead into bat. Conditions conspired to ensure that they received the best of batting conditions. Andy 'V festival' Jones toiled and Colin' Whats a v festival?' Jones took a while to wind up and Wanstead made a steady start.
Last weeks hero Chris 'Adam' Mckie came into the attack and found initial turn, managing to get the opener caught by Pasola behind the stumps. The batsmen did well not to be put off by the stench emanating from Pasola's kit. But Wanstead's other opener edged and chipped his way to a good fifty. Chris eventually turned to seem bowling as a total lack of turn came from the the pouring rain. Chris wound up with three wickets and Anil bought two but Wanstead continued to make progress eventually declaring on 209-5. Park looked wet, bedraggled and thoroughly peeved at proceedings.
Still Mrs Butcher's teas were enough to rouse the spirits. Cheese and onion sandwiches cannot be beaten!
Colin 'I'm an opening bat' Jones and Mathew 'Florida' Brett opened the Park reply with the later surviving an early LBW shout. The former played all around a straight ball and lost his middle stump seeing the skipper take up the willow. The skipper then played all around a straight one. Which saw 'V festival' Jones take to the wicket. An LBW saw the end of 'festival'. Pasola then took up the challenge and hit a few fours to make 21 before one of the worst overs on league history. It took nine balls. Two were no balls near the batsman's head. Another was a wide. Two were yorkers and two pitched on the track and two were full tosses. Surprised by one that was near him the batsmen chipped it to point where he was caught.
By this time Sam 'velcro' Hewitt was at the crease. Sam of the under 13's played fantastically. He put a massive price on his wicket. Playing adult cricket isn't easy and seeing grown men bowl bouncers at young Sam was uncomfortable viewing. Seeing Sam pull two of them for four was splendid viewing. Wickets continued to fall and it was left to young velcro and Anil Patel, coming in at 10 to secure the draw. Under the vagaries of the essex league scoring system, Park get four points, your get six if it were abandoned!
Thanks should go to Alex 'defensive prod' Jupp for stepping in at the last minute and Mike Hewitt who dropped one of his sons bowling and dislocated a finger whilst eating a sandwich! Next week its the last home league game of the season vs Old Parkoians, except Essex are in the FP trophy final and the v festival is on.
