WALTHAMSTOW v Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 4th XI on Sat 08 Sep 2007 at 12.30PM
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Won 6 wickets

Match report The final match of the league programme and Park had to win and also rely on the result at Chelmsford v. Hornchurch if they were to achieve promotion from 4th XI Premier to 3rd XI Division 3. In the event the first part was achieved comfortably against poor opposition, and the big win by Chelmsford ensured that the second part was achieved as Park leap frogged over long term league leaders Hornchurch to take second place. This was a fantastic achievement by Park's blend of youth and experience, with particularly credit to the younger players whose game improved as the season progressed. Throughout the season the team remained unbeaten and were never under the cosh, and although after the first six matches there were 5 drawn/abandoned and one cancelled, putting the team in the lower half of the table, in the remaining 11 that were played there were 9 wins.
Skipper Andy Jenner won the toss and asked Walthamstow to bat first on a pitch that produced odd variations of bounce, and had immediate success when he took a wicket in his first over, followed by a wicket in Hafiz Ali's second over. A lot of playing and missing and edging followed as the batsmen struggled against the accurate attack. Jerry Cichon decided to chance his arm and struck five boundaries but it was frantic stuff, as at the other end Ali removed opposition skipper Pickett, and Jenner removed numbers five and six to leave the score 85 for 6. The introduction of Dave Cobill's spin saw Cichon perish to the first delivery he received, clean bowled for 39, and Cobill struck twice more before suicidal running ensured two run outs for the innings to close on 101. Hafiz finished with 2 for 31, Jungle with 3 for 28 and Cobblers 3 for 10 to take his season's tally to an impressive 37 wickets (Ali finishing with 30 wickets and Jenner 33 wickets)backed by fielding and wicketkeeping that maintained the standard.
Park's reply raced away thanks to erratic bowling that over the course of the inning clocked up 21 wides! Jerry Trayler succumbed to one that kept low but Ammar Zahid played nicely for 25 to keep things ticking over and Ashu Dhabi hit some fine strokes straight and through the covers for 32 before perishing to a running catch at deep mid on with 30 needed. Graham Redwood kept the momentum going with 11 not out before Ammar was last out with the scores level going for a big hit to finish things off, the whole innings lasting only 16 overs. The winning margin belied the difference between the two sides as this was a comprehensive win.
Thanks to everyone who played this season for their efforts, everyone contributed with bat, ball or in the field and can look back with satisfaction on a season of many plusses and a final promotion!
