Gidea Park & Romford CC Saturday 4th X1 v BASILDON & PITSEA on Sat 25 Aug 2007 at 12.30PM
Gidea Park & Romford CC Won 7 wickets
After all the rain in the week the pitch at Gallows Corner was very wet but drying and the outfield was likewise slow and damp, so despite the fine weather, the match conditions made for slow and patient play. Park, showing five changes from last week owing to weddings and work and family commitments and calls from higher up the club, won an important toss and elected to field. Both Hafiz Ali and andy Jenner were right on the mark with their bowling from the outset and Hafiz struck early through a catch by Ammar Zahid, and then again through a well judged catch by Lloyd Renvoize, reducing the visitors to 37 for 2. The 3rd wicket pair dug in but a change of bowling introduced Ammar Zahid's medium pace and he promptly removed Fred Smith for 26 (who had been dropped in Jenner's first over and then proceeded to defy all the bowling for another 25 overs!). This brought in the dangerous Andrew Browne who had scored 80- in the first match between the clubs earlier this season, but he was bowled first ball by a cracking delivery by Zahid. The hat trick was avoided, but two overs later Zahid had another 2 in 2 and the innings was in tatters at 75 for 7 soon to be 75 for 8 as Dave Cobill chipped in with a caught and bowled. The last two wickets added 20 but the returning Hafiz cleaned up these wickets and Basildon were all out 95. Ammar had excellent and season's best figures of 7 overs 1 maiden 5 for 14, and Hafiz a well deserved 13.4 overs 2 maidens 4 for 31. Stand in wicket keeper Salim Patel and colts Lloyd Renvoize and Adam McKie deserve mention for their efforts in the field.
The pitch was still slow and awkward for the batsmen but Jas Chaggar and Ammar Zahid put the innings on course with a stand of 41 before Ammar was out by one that crept for 13. Graham Redwood added a breezy 12 but was then well held in the gully off a firm cut and Dave Pasola in his first inings this season was yorked for 0 to make it 67 for 3. There were few alarms though and Jas with 31 not out and Hafiz with three 4s in 18 saw Park home. This match was played in very good spirit by both teams, and leaves Park in the top 3 in a division that will go down to the wire over the next two weeks.
