Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Under 16's v Saffron Walden on Mon 28 Jul 2003 at 2.00pm
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Won 1 wicket

Match report Saffron won the toss and chose to bat. Tom Kershaw opened the bowling with Adam Locke and they both gave little away in a tight opening spell. Special mention here for Tom who has done well to put himself in the position of an opening bowler in a Matchplay game. Well done Tom but there is still work to be done so keep on it!!! Senior partner Adam Locke got the breakthrough by bowling the Saffon opener. Saffron then put on a bit of a stand but when Andy D'cruz came into the attack it all changed. Andy ended up with 4-20 off his 8 overs.. hitting the stumps twice and combining with keeperJack Kliber for the other two wickets. Jacks stumping was lightning quick. As with Tom, Jack has come a long way and kept wicket well at tiimes yesterday but there is still work to be done especially in the field... but don't worry Jack I have a plan in mind!!! Gary Coombe also bowled well and was unlucky not to get more than two wickets in his last Matchplay game. Matt Tarr took an excellent wicket with one that cut back and also took a wonderfully composed catch to give Gary's his first wicket. Tom and Adam then returned to polish off Walden with a wicket apiece. A good performance in the field except for 25 wides and 3 No balls ... that is simply not good enough and is not the standard we expect at this club. On a difficult pitch you cannot give your opponents 28 runs and nearly 5 extra overs.

Park had enjoyed some good starts in this competition but on this occassion when both openers failed it was up to the rest of the boys to show some guts and application. And to be fair most of the boys dug in and tried to tough it out. Special mention to Matt Tarr and Peter Collier who did exactly that. Tom Kershaw batted with real composure and a fair amount of skill to see Park home with the help of fellow opening bowler Adam Locke who is also beginning to fufil his potential with the bat. These two put on 40 runs for the 8th wicket and that left the stage for "glory hunting" skipper Ryan Sammons to hit is first ball for 4 to take park home.

And so ends another Matchplay season and all in all with a relatively young side we did a well as we could have expected. Next year we need to up our standards and build on the team spirit and see if we can proceed to the knockout stages of this competition. Very special thanks from all the boys to coach Bob Coombe for taking the trouble to make sure the team was well prepared for every game. It was a lovely touch bringing the round of drinks for the boys into the dressing room at the end of the game. Thanks Bob... you are a Star!!!
