Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v Upminster on Sat 17 Aug 2002 at 1.30
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Won 6 Wickets
Match report
Park went into this match with 3 players aged 14 & in all 7 players under 20. Ron Montgomery won the toss & had no hesitation in asking Upminster to bat. Paul Winmill carried the attack for Park with a superb spell of seam bowling, he bowled all the overs from one end in the searing heat & managed to ask questions of all the batsmen. Ryan Sammons enjoyed his 1st taste of 2nd team cricket bowling well to pick up 1-37. Phil Goldstone bowled well but failed to pick up any reward for his toils & Alan Croft nabbed 2 wickets.
The Upminster openers of skipper Neil Foss & Nigel O'Dell made solid but slow progress, made harder by the fact the skipper's groin went during his knock of 43, O'Dell made 50. They put on 108 in 32 overs, but the pressure on the batsmen in the middle order proved to much 2 runouts & 2 LBW's pegged Upminster back.
The ground fielding was good from Park with all players producing some fine stops. The catching let us down a little with 3 going to ground.
When it came to batting Park lost Andrew D'Cruz early playing on to Oliver Peck's left arm spin. Skipper Monty & 4th team vice skipper Matt Burch steadied the ship taking the score to 61 before Burch repeated what D'Cruz did playing on to Peck. Monty was now joined by James Patient. They put on 97 before Patient played on to Rob Tuffee, James Evans went 1st ball to Tuffee as well & afew alarm bells started ringing. The father & son partnership of Ron & Tom saw us home for Park to take a very pleasing victory.
