Match report
"I think it was hotter than this when I played in Kandy or was it Colombo" Jungle muttered as we huddled around the scorers table under the trees desperately trying to shelter from the searing heat. Winning the toss and batting was a necessity in these conditions and this we did. In the face of some tight bowling we lost both Ron & Keith for 17 & 9 repectively and 37-2 off 12 overs represented a problem, however a 62 run 3rd wicket partnership between Punit Satsangi (29) and Danny Cox got us back on track. Further contributions from Travis Hussain (27) and Jerry Trayler (29) enabled 50+ partnerships to form and after 52 overs a score of 222-7 was respectable. However I still think that we were perhaps 20/30 short despite the fact that Chingford bowled well in the conditions although it took them 3 hours and 20 minutes!! Great knock by Danny in the conditions and his 69 really anchored the innings.
In reply we got off to a great start with a wicket off the first ball but the theory that if you spend all that time in the field and then it is difficult to chase a large total was soon dispelled as 80 runs were added for the 2nd wicket in good time. A 3rd wicket partnership of 72 put Chingford in the driving seat and although we dismissed Woodland (58) & Shawyer (53) in the same over, ultimately 62 runs were required off the last 10 overs with 6 wickets in hand. Add to this the fact that Bruce and Jungle were now injured and we were down to 10 fielders as Ron had to go to work things seemed stacked against us. A superb aggressive effort from Paul Winmill meant that we captured wickets at regular intervals despite the fielders wilting in the heat. In the end 6 runs were required off the last over with 2 wickets in hand. After No.10 was bowled 4 runs were required from the last 4 balls and 1 from the last ball. With the field up we gained a run out off the last ball to achieve a tie!! Brilliant effort from Paul - 6-73 off 17 overs says it all. 15 points was a great return from a great game of cricket finishing at 8.30pm against by far the best side we have played all season. Equal credit to Chingford for the way they played with ball and bat. Kandy or Colombo? All I know is that in 30+ years I have never experienced conditions like that. By the way the points haul ensured us of promotion, now to win the league. Roll on Hadleigh. Well done.
