HORNCHURCH 5TH v Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 5th XI on Sat 30 Jul 2011 at 1PM
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Lost 79 runs
Match report
The match was played on the worst pitch we have seen this year, very dry and underprepared and with odd bounce and pace, and the toss to a large extent dictated the course of the match as the side winning it knew that if they could post a half decent total then the conditions would be getting worse from the first over. Hornchurch won the toss and batted, and a remarkable innings of 41 in only seven overs from young player Tiwari (7 fours and 1 six) all played with correct shots gave them a flying start. This was high class batting and somewhat out of place in a 5th XI game! He was run out from some brilliant work by Matt Creevy, but the tone had been set and Jones 35 and Kiff 37 accumulated from that point. At half way Hornchurch were 119 for 1 and looking at a massive score as the young Park side wilted, but the break saw a recovery as the last 9 wickets went down for 61 in 26 overs, only Lee Bryant coming good with 37. Colt Arun Kullar took 2 for 42 with his leg spin to make the break, and then the experienced combination of Ian Greenwood with 4 for 20 and Andy Jenner 3 for 51 did the rest, not helpd by what one might politely describe as eccentric umpiring. The Park fielding dipped from the standard set over the season and was mediocre. In reply Horcnchurch bowled very well by bowling a length relying on the pitch to do the damage and the Park battting had no real answer, missing the form players from previous weeks. Ian Greenwood battled it out for 19 before succumbing to one that stuck in the pitch and then acted like a tennis ball, and Sanjay Panwar decided that attack was the order of the day hitting some mighty blows with 7 fours and 1 six in 39 before being LBW. But it was never good enough and Park were well beaten in the end. One has to say that this was no pitch for young players (and there were plenty of them on both sides)and fortunately Park do not have to play on the ground again this year, although Hornchurch will and our sympathies go out to them.
