Braintree v Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Under 13's on Sun 17 Jul 2005 at 9.30am
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Lost 7 wickets

Match report In truth, the opposition were a bit too strong for us; they were very solid
in bowling with a particularly good leg spinner. They also possessed some
good, strong (though suspiciously large and hairy for thirteen year old)
batsmen. One of their parents let slip that they were an amalgamation of 3
clubs, Braintree, Witham, and Kelvedon & Feering. Not surprisingly, they
didn't have many weak players.
They won the toss and put us in to bat and Nathan hit a couple of early
boundaries but we lost Chris McKie LBW for a duck in the 3rd over which
started an ugly collapse. Nathan dollied one up into the covers one over
later, then Adam, having taken 10 of about 4 balls, launched into a pull
shot, where he promptly lost his balance and demolished his own wicket.
Lloyd then perished to a leading edge and was caught in the leg side and
were about 38 for 4.

Luckily Connor Halsey went on to play by far the best innings of the whole
U13 season as he repaired the damage with some lovely drives and pulls
combined with some solid, straight bat defence. Ali Ahmed lived dangerously
until he was out with about 60 on the board, but then Connor was to find two
valuable partners. First Daniel Herrold hung around for roughly 7/8 overs
for 3 runs, then David dug in for 11 overs, playing really determinedly,
scoring 7 ensuring we used up the 30 overs. Connor
and David had put on about 40 together for the 7th wicket.

We finished with 125 for 8, Connor finally dismissed for an excellent 58.
Having reached his well-deserved 50, he struck 2 more fine boundaries before
being bowled going for another 4 to boost our score at the death.

Unfortunately our bowling and out cricket wasn't up to our recent standards,
though Joe Thompson and David fielded well. Lloyd was a little erratic,
though fast at times again, but Chris McKie bowled well, gaining our first
wicket in 8th over. David and Colin, for once, were both expensive as their
best 2 players hit some really fine strokes. Ali Ahmed took two wickets in a
very encouraging spell, which was well supported by Adam's 3 tidy overs at
the other end. Nevertheless, it was all over after exactly 21 overs.
In summary, Connor was superb with the bat and the McKie's and Ali Ahmed
impressed with the ball but the combined strength of 3 teams was too much
for a side that had to be on top of their game and at full strength to have
had a chance of winning today.
