Match report with West Ham in the play-offs and with calls from higher elevens, Park were below strength for this opening league fixture and duly lost only their second match in over two years. Batting first on a terrific pitch that was a real credit to Brian's skills, the innings never got started and inside an hour the score was 66 for 5. Skipper Matt Burch has been in the runs this year but suffered a primary, and only Ron Montgomery coped with soem good Hainault bowling from Z Hussain. Ron was joined by Andy Jenner and they calmly added 56 and took the total to 112 before Jungle was bowled off his pads. The inings took another dive to 143 for 9 but some excellent digging in by Dave Cobill and Mark D'Cruz ensured a total of 167, made off 45 overs. Ron continued his good form of 2004 and notched an excellent 72.

On such a pitch this was never going to be enough. However, racing out of the blocks Paul Winmill and Rudi Filmatter quickly got at the visitors' batting and reduced them to 31 for 4. Opener Soar was playing positively and ultimately proved the difference as he batted trhoughout the innings. He added a further 40 for the 5th wicket in slightly fortuitous fashion with his partner before the next wicket fell. Unfortunatly we had no back up medium pace and the pressure eased somewhat despite a good spell from Cobblers. Anil Patel picked up a further wicket and the return of Wanger and Rudi put on more pressure to reduce the opposition to 158 for 7, but in the end the small total we had made could not be defended. The seam bowlers put in a magnificent effort it has to be said and promise well for future matches when the side should be back to better strength.

Next week it is 2004 champions Wanstead.
