CHELMSFORD 5TH v Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 5th XI on Sat 08 May 2010 at 1PM
Match was Drawn

Match report It was a bitterly cold day at Chelmer Park for this opening league game of the season but despite a damp start, the rain stayed away and a full match ensued. Late overnight team changes (when will they ever cease!) meant that Park fielded 10 men and found themselves in the field agaist a young but talented Chelmsford side. The pitch played well, and the hosts made a steady start aided by extras, some misfielding (blame the cold weather)and 5 penalty runs when the ball hit a helmet, reaching 40 before Rajesh Kanojia made the breakthrough thanks to a good catch by Ian Greenwood. A second wicket followed as Andy Jenner induced a false drive and the introduction of Nelson Lopes saw two more wickets fall, both clean bowled: 71 for 4. This became 103 for 6 as Nelson struck twice again, a bowled and an LBW, but the lower order were well marshalled by Sam Hollingsworth who reached a well played 63 before being last man out to Kanojia having added 29 for the last wicket with Alex Beard who made an assured 20 not out. Nelson finshed with the excellent figures, well deserved, of 6 for 49 off 16 overs, and Rajesh 3 for 56 of 12.2 overs, and there were good catches by Ian Greenwood (again) and Dave Osborne. The total was just above par for the conditions and Park immediately lost Ammar Zahid LBW to a good delivery which kept low. However, Ian Greenwood played very well supported by Anil Patel and the total moved to 69 for 1 as Ian hit eight 4s and Anil three 4s. Time to spare before the last hour, looking comfortable and on track, and then the self-destruct button as Ian was run out going for a risky second, and next ball Anil holed out to deep square leg: 69 for 3. Thereafter it was a struggle for Park's depleted batting line up as Andy Shepherd's leg spin caused a lot of problems and he ran through the middle order taking 5 for 36. At 114 for 8 and 14 overs left it was a likely Park defeat, but skipper Andy Jenner stood firm at one end with gutsy assistance from Andrew Trowse, who played very correctly (testimony to net practice, all players please note!) at the other end, as they resisted the home attack and played out for a draw with few alarms. All in all it was a well-contested match played in excellent spirit, and both sides could be content at having taken something out of the game at the end of a freezing day!
