Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 5th XI v LEIGH ON SEA 4TH on Sat 08 Aug 2009 at 1pm
Match was Drawn
Match report
Park lost the toss and were invited to bat on a damp and slow pitch that dried out as the game progressed to become slower and slower and slower and slower. After negotiating the first few overs with the ball darting around the openers put the Leigh attack to the sword. Arasu Balasobramaniam and Ian Greenwood complemented each other very well and hit boundaries and took other runs every over, putting on 140 before the latter was caught for 39. Ahmed Butt came in at three and proceeded to play his shots, no let up for the bowlers. However the Leigh over rate was funereal (indeed probably not as quick as that!)and only 26 were bowled after an hour and three quarters and indeed only 43 after two hours 55 minutes, which is unacceptable at any level. This was the only constraint on the batting as Arasu scored his maiden 100 for the club with 17 boundaries and continued his good form after two low scores. Leigh were soon in trouble to Rajesh Kanojia and the first wicket fell to a remarkable catch at short leg by Ian Greenwood. Thereafter with Ahmed Butt keeping things quiet at one end, Rajesh took two of the next three wickets with Nelson Lopes pitching in with one wicket to leave Leigh floundering at 40 for 4. Keith Baker counter attacked when possible hitting some big drives against close set fields but at the start of the last hour the score was 74 for 6 and this soon became 80 for 7. Thereafter there was stern resistance as with the pitch so slow and unresponsive a block was a straightforward proposition and the young tail end defended stoutly while Baker carried on blasting as Park surrounded the bat. In the end he remained 79 not out out of 167 for 8, well played, and Park took 8 wickets after bowling 52 overs. Kanojia finsihed with 4 for 63 off 18 overs and Lopes 3 for 59 off 16 overs, the other wicket falling to Ian Greenwood. The 11 points gained by Park keeps them well up the table in a well contested division.
