Gidea Park & Romford CC U16 v HORNDON ON THE HILL on Sun 11 May 2008 at 2PM
Gidea Park & Romford CC Lost by 5 wickets
Gidea Park and Romford were pretty much beaten by one player on this lovely sunday afternoon. Ryan Plom from Horndon on the Hill, returned with 5 for 21 and 91 n.o.to rattle GPR's hopes of heading the Mobil table. Without him in the side I think it would have been an even and close fought match, with perhaps GP&R getting the upper hand. GP&R batted first and stumbled to the loss of 3 wickets for less than 50, but Elliott Skinner(54) and Chris McKie(38) batted splendidly and with great discipline to add just shy of 80 for the 4th wicket. Elliott made a fine fifty and saw his stumps reel only when he decided to push for a faster run rate. Lloyd swished a quick 10, but no other players really did anything with the bat at all against some well disciplined and tight Horndon bowling. 146 was always going to be a tough one to defend but GP&R made the best possible start with 2 wickets in 5 overs for just 12 runs. But then enter Plom and despite the occasional departure of 3 more batsmen, including a fine catch from Tom Stephen, Plom finally found a partner who hung around long enough to allow him to smote everybody to the boundary, all except David Brett that is who bowled beautifully for commendable figures of 2 for 8 off 7 overs. Shame to see the boys lose after an encouraging win, but we really need more than 2 batsmen to click, and certainly more than one bowler. We also need to catch the catches when they come along, Plom was dropped twice, admittedly one of them a little tough.
