WOODFORD GREEN v Gidea Park & Romford CC U16 on Mon 05 May 2008 at 1PM
Gidea Park & Romford CC Won By 135 runs
A fantastic start for the U16's, too often at the wrong end of this sort of drubbing last year, it was refreshing to see them dish out a mauling to another team.
GP&R batted first and early wickets fell as Tom Stephen and Elliott Skinner went quickly with just 12 on the board. But a fine knock from Andy Jones (22) steadied the ship as he added 49 with skipper Adam McKie. There then followed a flurry of wickets as GP&R went from 61 for 2 to 81 for 6 in no time at all. David 'Barnacle' Brett joined Adam and they put on a disciplined 53 runs before Adam departed with an excellent 58 to his name. David then sheperded the tail through to the close falling himself for a well crafted and patient 23, with Anuarag and Joe chipping in with 10 runs each at the end.
This left a young Woodford Green side a tough target of 185, on a lush outfield, which made boundaries hard to come by. But the feat was made even tougher by an excellent opening spell from Lloyd Renvoize (2 for 6) and David Brett (4 for 16). Poor Woodford were left shell shocked at 30 for 8 after just 13 overs, but their tail stuck at it and just as they broached the 50 mark, Adam McKie took the last wicket to give GP&R a fine win. All the other GP&R bowlers did well, Anu, Jack, Joe and Chris all with tidy spells. Some excellent wicket keeping from Tom (no byes)and some safe catching, including a super quick catch from Elliott off of Lloyd were a delight to see.
There will be tougher opposition to come this year bit this was nonetheless a clinical and disciplined performance from the boys after so little practice on the slow pitches of early season. Good to see.
