BENFLEET v Gidea Park & Romford CC Saturday 4th X1 on Sat 28 Jun 2008 at 1PM
Gidea Park & Romford CC Won 8 wickets
On a fine day for cricket, at last, Park won the toss on their first visit to Benfleet for over 10 years and invited the home team to bat. 23 came off 5 overs but by this time both opening bowlers, having their first spells of the season, had attained some rhythm, and Waleed Wain struck three times, clean bowling each of his victims, and Ian Hunter had opposition skipper Dave Nash caught behind by Tommy Glanville to reduce Benfleet 3rds to 40 for 4. First change bowlers Adam Mckie and Harvir Jutla kept up the pressure and runs were hard to come by as Rob Zammit and John Wright dug in , adding 42 to take the score to 82 for 4 at the half way stage. Things then started to happen. Ammar Zahid was introduced to the attack and in two overs had mixed poor deliveries with two excellent wicket taking balls, and Dave Cobill nabbed one more courtesy of a very neat stumping by Glanville and Ian Hunter returned to take a further wicket, leaving the innings wrecked at 123 for 8. Zammit was still there and his defiant knock of 31 was ended by the returning Waleed Wain (clean bolwed again!), and apart from a brief flurry by number 10 Joshi who chanced his arm for 22, the innings finished on 162 following a run out. The score was boosted by no less than an exceptional 37 extras, including 27 wides, largely reflecting the rustiness of some of the bowlers! Waleed fully deserved his figures of 4 for 28 off 13 overs, bowling at a brisk pace and clean bowling each of his victims in a very promising display; Ian Hunter will have benefited from his first stint for two seasons, and Adam Mckie and Harvir Jutla kept things under control with line and length in an otherwise good display by the Park attack.
Graham Redwood made sure the Park reply was in a positive mode in his first innings of the season with four boundaries in a quick fire 20 as 40 were added in eight overs. His innings was ended by a brilliant diving catch off a full blooded pull, but Ammar Zahid joined Baljit Jutla and neither was in much difficulty against the Benfleet attack as they added 75 in good time. Baljit was in impressive form and after Ammar was bowled for 22, he and Tony Millar ensured a comprehensive 8 wicket win with 9 overs to go, Baljit finishing with 84 not out (including 15 fours) and Tony 25 not out with three fours and a six. Peter Hitchcock strove hard for Benfleet in a 17 over spell but this was Park's day all round and continued the improved form of the team over the last three games.
Next week we are at home to Epping 3rd XI.
