Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 4th XI v CHELMSFORD on Sat 24 May 2008 at 1PM
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Lost 7 WICKETS
Match report
A difficult week for avilability what with a big family party, exam study and family outings meant that the 4th team entered this match against last year's fellow promotion rivals Chelmsford 4ths with a side made up predominantly of juniors and only three senior players. Park lost the toss and were asked to bat first on a slow true pitch. Lee Carter fell with the score on 10 but Jas Chaggar and Ammar Zahid then made an excellent stand of 123 for the second wicket. It as slow going though as Chelmsford's attack bowled very well, with good control and to their fields. Ammar hit 11 fours in 57 before he was caught off the legspin of Halsey, but his departure exposed a very inexperienced middle order (average age 14) and they naturally found it hard work to score. That the total was eventually 161 was down to Jas batting through for a hard earned 70 not out. The innings was good experience for the junior players but a below par score!
Chelmsford began brightly but were pegged back initially by Jakk Carver who on debut produced excellent figures of 1 for 10 off 5 overs. Sterland made sure the innings had momentum with a well played 46, but after the score reached 60 two wickets fell in successive overs to Ammar Zahid and a further wicket would have made for an interesting finale. However, the inexperience of the attack (with the exception of Dave Cobill) saw regular scoring opportunities and neither of the 4th wicket pair of Balmford and Turner were troubled too much and received frequent scorable deliveries as they proceeded to reach their target in 25 overs, Balmford finishing 46 not out and Turner 32 not out to go with his 3 for 28 with the ball.
Not a good day at the office but Park finished with 5 points and can look forward to better avaialbility next week when they visit Orsett & Thurrock 3rds.
