BASILDON & PITSEA v Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 02 Aug 2008 at 1PM
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Won by 21 runs
Match report
GP&R won the game with a quite remarkable ending.
Basildon won the toss and asked Gidea Park to bat first. Despite the early loss of Patel, Baker and Tarr set about building an excwllent partnership on a wicket providing considerable assistance to the bowlers. Bedford produced a very testing opening spell with both bounce and movement off the pitch. Tarr was eventually caught for a very good 59, with Patient following soon after. Baker was again the person aroung which the innings was built, and with some quick runs scored at the end of the innings by Thomas and Churchill, GPR were able to declare on 249-5 after 48 overs. Baker making back to back hundreds finished 106no.
The Basildon innings went along steadily if unspectacularly and at the beginning of the last 20 overs were only two down needing around 6 an over. The key for them was opener Noble, and when he was stumped by Brant for 80, it looked like the game would finish in a draw. With one over to go, to be bowled by Churchill, Basildon required an unlikely 22 runs for victory with four wickets left.
What happened next was quite unbeleivable. First ball Smith was bowled for 23. Second ball, Iyer chipped the ball back to Churchill for a caught and bowled, Third ball Bedford was trapped infront of middle and given out LBW for Churchills hat-trick. With Three balls to go Park needed one wicket to win. Fourth ball, Parkinson edged to a quicker ball to slip which was excellently stopped by Baker. Thinking the ball had gone down to third man, the non striker called for a single and was run out. Four wickets in four balls in the last over of the game to win and keep GP&R top of the league.
