Gidea Park & Romford CC Saturday 1st X1 v UPMINSTER on Sat 02 Aug 2008 at 11.30AM
Gidea Park & Romford CC Lost by 7 wkts
A disappointing performance and heavy defeat for GP&R after a run of 5 wins in 7 games had lifted them to second in the table. After a rain delayed start they were asked to bat first in the overcast conditions and the innings got off to a bad start as first Russ Collard played on to McNally and then Shu Chowdhury was caught with just 3 runs on the board. As a recovery seemed to be underway Karn Sohal was then needlessly run out to put the pressure back on. Park's middle order all got starts but couldn't build a score as the combined spin of Iqbal and Ali extracted turn from the wicket and made run scoring difficult. Fortunately Kish Shallow, with a combination of watchfulness and attacking shots when the opportunity arose, was building an innings around which GP&R could try to build their score. When he fell just short of a deserved century, it looked like a defendable total might be out of reach. However, with Iqbal bowled out, the lower order and Ali Aslam in particular went for their shots to push the score towards 200. As wickets fell in the search for extra runs the innings closed as GP&R were all out for 212 in the last of their reduced allocation of 61 overs.
Another rain break delayed Upminster's reply but when play got underway there was almost an immediate breakthrough as Ali top edged a Donovan Miller bouncer only for the chance to elude the man at deep fine leg. There wasn't long to wait for a wicket though as several balls later Miller knocked back Mack's off stump. Another chance off Ali went begging as the catch was dropped and he took full advantage of the lapse fielding, looking to attack the bowling at every opportunity and racing to a half century. A mistimed shot eventually presented a chance that was taken but with Rath playing solidly at the other end, Upminster had a platform on which to push on for the win. Park's spin attack of Aslam and Ferns couldn't dominate the batsmen as Upminster's had earlier and despite claiming the wicket of Rath, Ison and McNally saw Upminster to their target without further loss and with time to spare.
GP&R drop to third on the back of this defeat and will be looking to bounce back with next week's visit to South Woodford.
