FIVES & HERONIANS v Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Evening Standard Challenge Trophy 1st XI on Sun 06 May 2007 at 1PM
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Lost 2 wickets

Match report Park bowed out of the Evening Standard Challenge Trophy when a below strength team lost in an exciting encounter at Fives & Heronians. The pitch played a significant part in the match, playing a lot of tricks first up as the ball seamed and bounced around and was not at all like the flat pitches experienced so far this season. Batting was very difficult for the early Park order as the bowlers put the ball in the right areas consistently, and even the in-form Russell Collard and Amar Zaem found life very difficult. Indeed there were only 7 scoring shots possible in the first 11 overs from the pavilion end so much was the ball moving around. After 15 overs the score was a parlous 15 for 4 but Phil Goldstone and Matt Sutton managed to effect a recovery from there to take the score to 66 (Goldstone 19, Sutton 27) when both were out in a short time of one another to make it 72 for 6. Rudi Filmalter added 27 but it took a last wicket stand of 28 between Chris Webber and Shakeel Afridi to push the score to somewhere near acceptability and give the Park attack the chance to pull back the game. For Fives the left arm seamers of Kay recorded remarkable figures of 10 overs 3 maidens 11 runs and 3 wickets, whilst Chris White finished with 4 for 23 and Platt 3 for 58.
Danny Stevens took a robust approach in the Fives reply which wa sprobably right in the conditions, hitting six fours in a rapid 36, but Zaem and Haris Afridi both stuck to their task and removed Gary Edwards for 9, Beckett for 0 and Rotsey for 1 to leave Fives 43 for 3 off 12 overs. Game on! White was caught behind by Webber off Zaem and although Terry Ballard struck a couple of boundaries the match was swinging Parks way and at 25 overs the score was 81 for 7. Ballard then embarked on a tour de force innings, hitting out at every opportunity against the second line attack. He managed to farm the bowling in an 8th wicket stand of 41 with Kay, who scored 4, and then effectively ended the match by taking 19 off an over, something that on this pitch was as unlikely as snow at the equator! He finished with a remarkable 80 not out having struck 12 fours and three sixes in a chance less knock as Fives got home by two wickets. Zaem deserved better than his figures of 3 for 32 off 10 overs, and the Park fielding reamined at a good standard throughout, including a slick run out as the innings dipped midstream, but in the end it was not enough.
