Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Sunday 3rd X1 v Hornchurch Athletic 2 on Sun 10 Aug 2003 at 2pm
Match was Drawn
Match report
Park took to the field with 8 colts and 3 vets and toiled in the heat. It was hard work for the boys but they tried hard and stuck to the task. Pick of the bowlers was Danny Coombe who bowled well up the hill to get two wickets for 18 including the Hornchurch Athletic Top scorer O'Neil who's dismissal on 91 brought the declaration. Both the Athletic openers made good scores with Newling unlucky to be denied his half century by a direct hit and Rugley who grinded his way to 56 before also falling to Danny Commbe.
231 to win was always going to be a touch ask for this young side but they got off to a fine start with Andy D'cruz and Craig Bray batting sensibly and scoring at a good rate. A thunderstorm broke their rythymn a bit and when they returned the outfield that had been lightening fast had slowed down. Parks target was adjusted to 214 following the rain and the boys tried hard to chase it. Craig Bray fell eventually for 31 and Andy D'cruz completed his 50 before being dismissed for 56. Billy Payne hit a quickfire 16(quickfire is Billys trademark) and Peter Collier after a slow start finished with an undefeated 40.
A hard earned draw and a fine match. Credit should be given to the Hornchurch Athletic skipper Chris Humpreys who kept the game interesting right to the end
