Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Chingford on Sat 03 May 2003 at 1.30pm
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Won 42 runs
Match report
Chingford on winning the toss put the home side in to bat on what can only be described as wet & very green wicket. Batting first was always going to be difficult but new boy Leigh Davey and Barry Hyam set about building a sound foundation. Leigh scored a steady 27 runs ( not bad for someone fresh off the plane from Adelade) in a first wicket stand of 61 runs.
Andy Churchill looking in great touch already this season joined Hyam and scored a very brisk 39 runs , helping Hyam to a solid half century and the total to a respectable 150 for 1.With overs rapidly running out, Gidea Park threw caution to the wind and some big hitting from Hyam 80 , Mel Hussain 23 Not out and Ananda 13 not out , helped the home team to a fighting target of 191-3.
With a strong wind and a mostly sunny afternoon the wicket was drying out quickly and it was important not to allow Chingford off to a quick start. Andy Clarke and Monty bowled a very tight line making it difficult for Chingford from the off . Chingford never really looked like threatening the required run rate and were well off target by the time the spin twins of Churchill & Hussain were called into action. Baljit got a couple of useful wickets with his medium-pace swingers but it was the left-arm spin of Andy
Churchill ( 5-27) and Mel ( 1 -25) that eventually broke Chingford, finishing them off, 42 runs short.
