Woodford Green v Gidea Park & Romford CC U16 on Sun 15 Jun 2003 at 2.00pm
Gidea Park & Romford CC Won 3 Wickets
GPRCC Lost the toss and were put in under the hot sun. The boys started excellently contesting every run with the new ball partnership of Tom Kershaw and Adam Locke concedding just 10 runs off he first 9 overs. Adam was miserly and returned to get three late and well deserved wickets for just 14 runs. Tom finished with 4-22 including 3 cleaned bowled. The Woodford Green middle order led by skipper Hawkes put up a good recovery with the skipper getting to 92 after being dropped in the 30s and 60s. Hawkes was chiefly responsible for Woodford Green getting to 166ao. All the other bowlers bowled well with Ceraig Bray doing well by picking up two late wickets.
GPR reply started slow against some good and hostile bowling after which the middle and lower applied themselves brilliiantly. Matt Tarr showed again he is capable of scoring heavily at this level(18). The real stars were to follow however. Peter Collier and Jack Kliber both knuckled down, both batted over an hour and put us in a winning position. Danny Coombe batting at 8 came in and struck some superb pull shots before having to be carried off the field injured on 25 not out. TOP KNOCK Danny... not bad for a half-pint!!!!. Big Brother Gary Coombe was not going to let his brothers efforts go unrewarded and helped by Adam Locke keeping down one end hit the winning 4 with 11 balls left. Great effort boys. A deserved win under difficult conditions.
Learning points from this game.
1.You are all capable players you just have to do this kind of thing more consistantly.
2. You don't have to sink to low standards of behaviour just because your opponents do. Let your cricket do the talking. Les Hall would have been disappointed with our behaviour. This is below the standards we expect at GPR
3. Good fielding wins matches. You guys were not afraid to get your body in the way of the ball.
4. You must be focused on winning not reading newspapers and talking about Only Fools and Horses while your teammates are busting a gut trying to win a cricket match
