Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 3rd XI v Westcliff-on-Sea on Sat 12 Jul 2003 at 1.30pm
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Won 9 wickets
Match report
After having lost the toss and been put in, Westcliff had few alarms in the first hour and scored reasonably freely until Paul Winmill bowled opener Harrison for 26. 59-1 became 60-3 as Paul gained 2 LBW decisions in 3 balls (1 was fortunate but no blame to be attached to the umpire as from 23 yards away nicks cannot always be heard. The other was plumb!). With numbers 5 & 6 both clean bowled by Paul 74-5 indicated that the game had been turned on its head. Unfortunately a groin strain ended Paul's
spell with the figures of 14.1-3-41-5 brilliantly saying it all. Ian Gordon's debut for the 3rd eleven this season resulted in him completing the over and with the final ball another wicket fell and Westcliff were now 104-6. After drinks Andy Jenner cleaned up the tail for 21 runs to finish with 4-33 from 12 overs. Westcliff had lost all their wickets for 66 runs and tea was taken at 3.40.
Obviously the LBW decisions had unfortunately upset our opposition so much so that some of the comments made by the fielders had to be heard to be believed. Now I don't pretend to ba a saint and I know that collectively any side representing our club will not admit to being saints but after being spat at, sworn at and chucked at (by the bowler) and taking into account all the other puerile and sad remarks made about not only our side but our club, here was one wicket that they were not going to get!!! Unfortunately for Westcliff they failed to get 8 other wickets and a 9 wicket victory was completed at 6.25!
Well done to Keith Wright for getting back to form with a typically belligerent 45 and to Ron Montgomery for seeing things through with yours truly for 18 not out. An intense game with not a lot of handshakes at the end but then according to one of their fielders
Westcliff didn't want to reduce themselves to our levels! Hmmm have a look at the league table. When league cricket is played on a village green on a Sunday afternoon we'll all just turn up with no pride and go through the motions! Roll on Saffron Walden.
