Hallelujah, the managers run of Peter Coe Cup groundhog days was finally broken as for the first time in 7 outings we gave someone a decent game and at one point had a powerful opposition sweating a little!

GP&R had batted first on a 20 yard pitch (error on the Upminster groundsman’s behalf) and batted solidly but painfully slowly against a strong Upminster attack. Our batsmen rarely looked in any trouble but at the same time rarely threatened to get the ball off of the square as the top 3 took a full 21 overs to get the score past 50. When Josh and David eventually departed for 29 and 21 respectively the rest of the side found it equally difficult to make an impression with only Noor (25 off of 18 balls) able to get the ball away. So at half-way GP&R had accumulated a lowly total of 89-6, surely not enough to seriously challenge…..

However when Upminster replied the Park opening attach of Josh and Kudiwa really tore into Upminster’s top order and after 4 overs had them wobbling at 11-4 having taken two wickets apiece. Unfortunately the rest of the Park attack looked toothless and despite 2 wickets for Harry allowed Upminster to recover and run out comfortable winners at 90-7 with a full 11 overs to spare. While it was great to have put the wind up the opposition for a short time the position was a little flattering as, with such a low score to chase, Upminster had definitely tinkered with their batting order.

The game within a game was also won by Upminster as the scores taken after 20 overs of each innings to make-up the Havering League result saw them run out as comfotable winners with 90-7 vs. Park's 41-1.

The most obvious lesson to learn relates to how we bat and run between the wickets, as it’s still a case of big shots or nothing. No-one in the side seems able to run the ball around and to take singles, so against an accurate attack which is not feeding us ‘4 balls’ we tend to score very slowly. The first and only quick ‘drop it and go’ single came in the last over of our innings when young Kiran marched down the wicket to tell Elliot what he wanted him to do - an 8 year old showing the 12 and 13 year olds the way! This is definitely something to work on over the winter……

So, in summary, in the Peter Coe Cup we have played 7 and lost 7 and picked up some very heavy defeats along the way. As I’ve said before this may not feel much fun at the time but it’s all good learning, which if the players are bright enough to take it on board and learn from the experience should set them up to be more competitive next year when most of the side will be the same age (school year 8) as the players they are playing against.
