Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 4th XI v CHELMSFORD on Sat 08 Jul 2006 at 1.30pm
Match was Drawn
Match report
On a very good batting pitch and a fast outfield at Gallows Corner this is a match that Park should really have won against a young but talented Chelmsford side, and to fall short by three runs was very disappointing, albeit a haul of 8 points was partial recompense. The absence of a regular wicketkeeper once again assisted extras despite the good efforts of the stand in, coupled with too many wides, and in the end these proved vital. Andy Jenner and new recruit Sukvair Jutla bowled well with the new ball and each took a wicket which with a run out smartly fielded by Alan Croft reduced the visitors to 70 for 3. Thereafter the bowling was a little ragged with good deliveries interspersed with poor ones which were despatched to the boundary by Kyan in a very aggressive 64 and Stock in a more subdued but no less valuable role with 78. they were carrying chelmsford to a big score but the introductiopn of Dave Cobill's spin immediately produced two wickets and the return of Andy Jenner slowed the run rate such that a final score of 259 was about par for the fast conditions. Jenner recorded 4 for 35 off 16 overs and Cobill 2 for 55.
The Park reply through Jas Chaggar and Tom Montgomery was excellent with both looking in good touch. They put on 99 before Tom was very well caught and bowled by a diving bowler. Sam Bragg played himself back into some form with a well paced 25 and Jutla added to his bowling with a hard hit 38. All the while the run rate was under control and Jas played d a fantastic anchor role with some fine drives and shots throuh the offside to record his maiden century for the club and finishing with 121 not out. However, he lost the strike for periods at the end of the innings as some erratic bowling, not really hittable but not wides, slowed down the new batsmen who found it difficult to get the ball away, and although 23 were needed in four overs the task became harder; at one stage all the fielders were on the boundary to Chaggar, which was an odd site to say the least. 12 were required off two overs and eight off the last; Jas took a single, but for the last four balls we were unable to score other than wides (we learned after the match that under instruction the bowler bowled two wides to try and get a stumping apparently!). So the match ended drawn, but it had been well contested and in played good spirit.
Next week we meet local rivals Ardleigh Green.
