Woodford Wells 'B' 91-7
Gidea Park & Romford 92-2
GP&R win by 8 wickets

With Upminster ‘B’ having let us down for the scheduled league game we were very pleased to welcome Woodford Wells ‘B’ to Gallows Corner for a hastily arranged friendly.

There was much debate within our team before the start as to what captain for the day Noor Ahmed should do in the conditions (a combination of a wet pitch from the overnight rain and a sunny sky) with our wise old pros (school years 4 to 6) weighing up the pros and cons of having to bowl with a wet ball vs. batting later with a drier faster outfield. Noor duly won the toss and asked ‘Wells’ to bat first.

After a solid but slow start to their innings the ‘Wells’ were soon in trouble as the GP&R attack’s accurate bowling began to take its toll. The first 6 wickets to fall were all clean bowled with 2 victims each for Noor, Elliot Ross and George Tewkesbury. At the 10 over mark ‘Wells’ were struggling on 35 for 6 but their late order batsmen staged something of a recovery to eventually post a total of 91-7 from their 20 overs. Nathan McArthur picked up the other wicket to fall (with the help of an excellent catch from Noor) so congratulations to Nathan for picking up his first club wicket on his competitive match debut. Indeed, congratulations to all of the bowlers, as the bowling was generally far more accurate than in our earlier matches with roughly half the number of wides that had been bowled in the previous 2 games. Is Carl’s patience and perseverance with the Friday night ‘target bowling’ practice finally starting to pay off?!

Despite losing the limping George Earle early (probably fortunately as he was batting with a runner and no one including the umpires was particularly sure what to do!) the GP&R top order made light work of the run chase. A great partnership between Noor (retired 25 not out) and Charlie Haddon (retired 22 not out) put ‘Park’ well in front of the required run rate and allowed Elliot (16 not out) and George T. (4 not out) to ease the team home with 4 overs to spare. With runs, wickets, a great catch and some good captaincy there could only be one man of the match – congratulations Noor!

All in all an improved team performance bringing about a comfortable and morale boosting win. Credit is also due to Woodford Wells for setting up the game at such short notice and for playing the game in such good spirit. Their ‘B’ team was a credit to their club and we hope to be able to arrange a further mid-week game between the two clubs later in the season.

Things get tougher for us next Sunday with an already confirmed home league fixture vs. Upminster ‘A’. As normal team selection and match arrangements will be confirmed at Friday’s coaching session.
