Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 4th XI v HORNCHURCH 4TH on Sat 22 May 2010 at 1PM
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Won 20pts
Match report
Dear Diary,
On Saturday I awoke at 5am in Amsterdam. After a light breakfast of scrambled eggs, ham and smoked salmon with a nice orange juice and tremendous black coffee I climbed on a minibus with a bloke from Ohio for and lady from Brazil for the short trip to the maze that is Schipol Airport.
I hate flying so sitting in the bar at 7am watching tv pictures of an aircrash in India did me no favors. Fortunately in acient times a beverage was divised out of water, hops, and barley. 2 pints of Amstel later and I stepped on the plane back to Gatwick. 10:30am.
Dash from Gatwick to Gallows Corner and I arrived in time for the toss which we won and I decided to bat first. The pitch looked flat the sun was shining and after all its Gallows Corner and thats what you do!
1pm. Ron Montgomery and Matt Brett opened and the runs didn't start to flow as I expected. Tight bowleing from Danny Foxton abley assisted by Muhammed Bilal kept the scoring down. Matt left a straight one and had his of stump hit. See Sam Hewitt walk out to the middle. Ron had moved on to 16 before padding up to another straight one which again hit the off stump.
Returning to Saturday Action Chris Goldsmith walked out to join Sam and quickly found himself coming back again as a faint edge carried through to Chase behind the stumps.
Sam was plodding along nicely as I came out to replace Chris. Sam then fell as another faint nick carried to teh keeper. I had 32 runs however soon found myself coming back after hitting 7 fours the Dollar signs were rolling in my eyes as a short ball was bowled then shaped in and cramped me for room. Caught.
James Pegram was in thou.In his own unathordox fashion was looking quite good. Two sixes and several fours and a deserved 56. Aaron added 12 and Kier Smith added a good important 30. Dave Cobill hit a stunning square cut and as single before Gurjit Jutla walked out to the middle only to walk back without facing a ball as Kier looked for quick runs.
At the interval all I wanted was sleep. I was far too hot, far too tired. 181 runs also I didn't feel was enough. The sun was still shining when the Hornchurch openers came out to bat. Surely they would fancy their chances, fast outfield and a good pitch. Kier's first over was tight and Gurjit's was just as good. Conversation in the slips revolved around how close we should be for Gurhjit (mainly for Ron's safety).
Soon Imram Khan nicked a ball from Gurjit straight to myself at first slip and GPR were in the chase. Gurjit followed thatby bowling out C Jacobs and things were looking good for Park. Kier kept nbowling tite and at teh other end wickets kept falling as Gurjit removed another bulls batsman. Sam Hewitt came on a got another before Aaron Hughes bowled the second opener.
Still at 80-5 Hornchurch must have fancied there chances still. Gurjit came back for a second and even better spell. Removing two more to claim his first 5 for of the season.
Kier got reward with the wicket of Daniel Foxton and then strangest wicket of the day as a sort ball was gloved down by the batsman it rolled towards the stump knocking of a bail before the batsmans bat demolished the rest.
With one wicket remaining I proved unabvle to count and had to replace Gurjit with Aaron and also got Old Man Cobblers to turn his aged arm. 4 balls later the game was over as a skied ball from Cobblers was caught by Sam Hewitt at square leg giving Park a 56 run victory.
I retired to the bar for my first drink since 7am and a good nights sleep. Gurjit proceeded to tell his brothers about his five for in detail, according to Baljit "too much detail".
