Hornchurch B v Gidea Park & Romford CC U15 on Sun 29 May 2005 at 9.30am
Gidea Park & Romford CC Lost 2 with one ball left
GPRCC batted first. Eddie Gavigan (26) & Mathew Peacock (46) opened the batting putting on an excellent first wicket stand of 59 well constructed runs by both individuals. It was very rewarding to watch both boys bat, in particular Mathew a young man who has been hiding the cricketer I new existed within WELL BATTED Mathew. Waleed WAIN (14) came to the wicket and together he and Mathew put on further 35 runs their partnership culminating in the 16th over with GPRCC on 93. Unfortunately due to some very good bowling by the H'church B lads in particular P Selvi a young lad who came on late in our innings and bowled 2 overs of very accurate left arm over deliveries finishing with figures 2overs-2mdns-0runs-3wkts, we were restricted to a total of 105 only achieving 11 off the last 4 overs.(extras totaled 14 a good effort by Hornchurch).
In the field GPRCC got off to a good start reducing H'church to 1 for 2. H'church rallied and although some good spells of bowling were achieved by Eddie Gavigan, Steven Gallagher and Waleed Wain H'church reached 95 runs from 19 overs requiring 11 from the last over. Skipper Waleed Wain had marshalled his fielders well and took on the responsibility of bowling the last over, this seemed a particularly good position for GPRCC to be in as Wain had been hit for NO RUNS in his first 3 overs. A young man called J Deffraites on 1 run batting No7 was at the wicket to face Waleeds first ball ( I, Ian Gallagher was the umpire at the bowlers end) which was a good length ball a little wide outside the off stump a swing with a diagonal bat and the ball sailed over extra cover for 4, followed by a good length second ball better line just outside the off stump which again was thumped over the off side for a further 4 leaving H'church requiring a further 3. To Waleed's credit he made them wait until the penultimate ball to hit the winning run. A close well fought game culminating in a loss for GPRCC. A significant factor was the fact we conceeded 27 extras - 13 more than H'church.
Man of the Match; MATHEW PEACOCK for an excellent first attempt at opening scoring 46 runs.
