Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v FIVES & HERONIANS on Sat 02 Jul 2005 at 1.30pm
Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club Lost 18 runs
Match report
Park, with a strong looking batting line up, elected to chase having won the toss against a Fives side currently top. Despite putting in a good bowling performance, several missed chances proved crucial as Fives totalled 242 in 52 overs, Braithwaite top scoring with 68 having been dropped twice in two balls. Barry Olivier bowled with his usual aggression in an 11 over opening spell that deserved more than his one wicket while Jason Toogood, also given the new ball, beat the bat on several occasions as well. Rudi Filmalter and Alan Croft bowled for the rest of the innings unchanged, Rudi's consistency earning him three wickets and with Crofty growing more confident as his spell went on, he ended with two wickets also. It was pleasing that Park's urgency in the field meant there was plenty of time to chase down the total.
However, Park got off to a terrible start as Fives opening attack, bowling well in the overcast conditions, moved the ball around and made life uncomfortable for the batsmen. Playing some loose shots, Park found themselves 20-3 and then 40-4 in quick time with 242 seeming a long way off. Then, in an incredible turnaround, two excellent stands took the team to the brink of victory. First, with Greg Churchill supporting at one end, John Baker began to time the ball beautifully to score a quick and impressive 52. After JB was bowled, Rudi then stepped it up another gear, hitting the ball hard and clean, including several huge sixes, to leave Park needing just another 40 at less than a run a ball. With the opening bowlers brought back into the attack, a excellent yorker got through Rudi's defences to set up a nail biting finish. Then, after a patient supporting innings of 58, Greg was disappointingly adjudged LBW to leave Park eight down still requiring another 25 runs. Despite a last effort, the skipper was last out, caught going for what would have been an important win. The fact that it was such a tight, exciting game is little consolation to a Park side who had come so close to victory over a strong Fives team.
