Gidea Park & Romford Cricket Club - Bruce Adams RIP

Bruce 'Homer' Adams
18/12/46 to 17/05/2011

It is with great sadness that GP&RCC announce the passing of much loved club member Bruce Adams after a brave fight against cancer.

Bruce first came to prominence in local cricket circles in the mid 60's as a fast bowler for Rainham C.C. He attracted the attention of Essex and between 1968 and 1970 he made a number of appearances for the county in the Second Eleven Championship. His most successful performance was in August 1968 when he took 5 for 66 against Surrey at the Oval. When it became clear that his career was to be in the City rather than in cricket he settled back to playing club cricket at Rainham eventually becoming President of the club.

His involvement with GP&RCC started around the mid 80's when his son Ian joined the colts section eventually becoming a successful captain at various age groups.Ties with Rainham loosened and Bruce began playing at Gidea Park captaining a successful 3rd X1 for several seasons including winning the league title. After hanging up his boots Bruce became involved with the administration of the club serving both as Vice Chairman and Chairman of the club for several years. During his tenure as Chairman the club enjoyed its most successful playing period of recent times with the 1st X1 winning the Premier League title followed by being runners up, although Bruce would have been far too modest to claim any credit for that!

Bruce had a real love for Gidea Park and once he had finished playing he also served the Club as an Umpire, scorer and as an incredibly loyal supporter whose opinions were valued by players and opposition alike.

He will be sadly missed by all and it was a great tribute to Bruce the man that his funeral and wake was so well attended by family, friends, past and present clubmates!
